Listening with humans who are listening with whales has been my full-time job for a few years now, and in the process, I have learned to love our species. Yes, many of us are destroying our planet. We are making terrible collective and individual decisions, and, despite knowing better, we are moving against our collective well-being.

And yet, listening with humans listening with whales has revealed to me the enormous amount of work that so many people are doing across the world, across disciplines, and at different scales to advance whale rights, protect our oceans, and move people toward change.

Listening with humans also means to listen across differences: stretching to hold distinct and sometimes opposing ways of knowing, relating to, researching, protecting, and making meaning of and with whales.

I hope Listening with Whales might be a digital commons that nourishes seeds of hope and fills your pockets—as it has mine—with small and existing discoveries.

You may listen with humans who are listening with whales within specific disciplinary traditions or follow currents that flow across and between them. These paths continuously flow into one another, as these ways of knowing are interconnected, porous, and non-linear.
